How to Plan a Dessert Table for a Small Party
A small gathering can have a lovely dessert table without requiring a second guest list for all the desserts. Start with the number of people, choose one main treat, and give everyone a little room to serve themselves. A favorite color, a handwritten note or a pretty plate can do the rest.
Whether you’re planning a birthday, a fall get-together or dessert with a few friends, here’s a practical way to put it together.
Start with the people and the portions
Write down how many people are coming and what else you’re serving. Cake after dinner and an afternoon gathering built around dessert call for different plans. Decide whether you want each person to have one serving or the chance to try a few things.
Check the serving size of the actual product before ordering. Mini cakes vary in size, and a small cake can still be intended for sharing. Tell your baker your guest count, whether children are included, and what other desserts will be on the table.
Ask guests about dietary needs early, and discuss them with the baker before placing an order. A flavor name or a photograph won’t tell you whether something is suitable.
Choose one dessert to build around
Pick the thing you’re most excited to serve. That might be a small celebration cake, a set of mini cakes or a simple selection of cupcakes. Once that choice is made, it’s much easier to decide whether you need anything else.
For a small table, one main dessert and an optional second choice is a useful starting point. You can offer variety through flavor or texture without adding six more platters. Your kitchen counter is allowed to remain a kitchen counter.
For an autumn example, the Halloween Mini Cake Box brings four different designs together: lilac ghosts, an orange BOO cake, a green monster and ivory pumpkins. See the Halloween assortment and reservation details.
Use a little color and a clear layout
Choose a small color palette from the dessert itself. Repeat one or two colors in the napkins, a ribbon or a tablecloth. Leave some open space around the food so guests can see what’s there and reach it comfortably.
Use a stable cake stand or platter that comfortably fits what it holds. Place plates and napkins at one end, keep serving utensils easy to find, and leave space for someone to put down a plate while cutting a slice.
Before buying anything, look at the plates, trays and linens you already own. A coordinated table doesn’t require a matching set of everything.
Plan the practical details before guests arrive
Decide where the desserts will be stored, when you’ll set them out, and who will cut and serve them. Follow the baker’s product-specific storage and serving instructions. Keep those instructions with the order so the person helping you has them too.
A small card with the flavor can help guests choose. Keep any ingredient or allergen information accurate and based on what the baker has provided.
Set aside a knife, server, napkins and containers for leftovers. These are not the glamorous parts of the photograph, but you’ll be glad they’re ready.

Small dessert table questions
How many desserts should I plan for?
Start with the number of guests and whether dessert follows a meal. Check the actual serving size of each cake or treat, then decide whether guests will have one serving or sample several. Give your baker the headcount and the rest of the menu before choosing quantities.
Can mini cakes work on a small dessert table?
Yes. Mini cakes can be the main dessert or part of a small assortment. Plan the serving portions before ordering; a mini cake is not automatically a single serving.
